Coolsculpt

Sometimes in our life we decide to take control of our body shape and aim to reverse the lumps and bumps of fat acquired during puberty, pregnancy, absent-mindedness and other times of physical change. Age and hormonal changes can make it difficult to shift these areas without becoming uncomfortably thin. All languages have names for these areas, suggesting it is a world-wide phenomenon and desire to rid them from our bodies! Love handles, muffin tops, banana fat (under the bottom) and bingo wings are all terms that we are familiar with and may start using of ourselves.

The Coolsculpt device is FDA approved to permanently remove stubborn fat from the body by literally freezing it away. No injections, no surgery and no scars. Many fat-freezing devices are available but Coolsculpt has been proven to work and to be safe, so safe that the whole body can be treated within a day.

The number of treatments that you will need depends on the amount of fat that needs to go. Coolsculpt is a treatment for pockets of stubborn fat, not generalised obesity. However even people with generalise fat storage have stubborn lumps and bumps which can be treated once a diet and exercise routine is installed to control the weight problem. In this way moral can be maintained and a good overall result can be achieved even in very large people.

At the first consultation we will give you an estimate of how many treatments are recommended; maybe one, two or three per area. The frequency of the treatments depends on your needs; we can repeat the treatment from after four weeks. Each area takes about an hour to treat. There are various head sizes available, we will select the best one for your body shape. One large head will treat the same amount of fat as two small heads, although some areas will respond better with two small heads. For this reason we keep the charges comparable between large and small so that we select the best treatment option for you.

Afterwards the area can be swollen and tender. Some people experience weird sensations such as pinching or stabbing a few days after the treatment. If this is intolerable we can prescribe painkillers stronger than over the counter medicines for those few days.

After a few days the swelling subsides and the results begin to show. Best results are achieved after three months, maximised of course by your own efforts.

Aqualyx

This is similar to the old "flab jab"; refined and recreated with a product licence and safety data for the treatment of stubborn fatty areas. Aqualyx is deoxycholate (bile salt) that dissolves the fat cell membrane, causing it to destroy itself (just like the Coolsculpt). Injection of Aqualyx is made directly into the fatty area. This does not hurt, but the area can swell for up to seven days. After this, the area starts to subside as the fat is absorbed by the body. If necessary the treatment may be repeated at four week intervals.

Aqualyx is suitable for stubborn fatty areas that are too small for the Coolsculpt device or as an alternative to Coolsculpting. Our most popular area is for the jawline; double chins and heavy jawlines respond well to Aqualyx and can redefine the jaw completely. We recommend reducing the heavy jawline before threading in order to achieve the best results from both treatments. Like all fat-reducing treatments a sensible diet and exercise routine is recommended. Alcohol and sugars are the worst offenders.

Cellulite

Dr Elisabeth Dancey introduced mesotherapy, one of the essential tools in the treatment of cellulite, to the UK over twenty years ago. Since then the concept of cellulite as a medical disorder and its treatment has been taken seriously. Many new treatments have been developed and for the most part mesotherapy has been replaced with the newer, less invasive radiofrequency devices.

Cellulite is fatty tissue (however little; even slim girls can develop cellulite) altered by a combination of inadequate circulation, lymphatic drainage and venous drainage of the lower limb. Circulatory and drainage problems arise as a result of our Western diet and lifestyle, genetic factors, the female hormone oestrogen and probably many other factors. Such alteration in otherwise healthy fatty tissue is seen as the lumpy bumpy tethered effect caused by development of thick inelastic fibres surrounding the fat cells.

Treatment aims to improve circulation to and drainage from the legs, plus to encourage fat removal from the stubborn fat cells. Radiofrequency devices heat up the tissues beneath the skin, opening up tight blood vessels and softening tissue fibres. Fluids when warmed flow more readily, the relaxation of the body as a response to the treatment encourages further fluid removal from the legs.

We have the Accent device for treating cellulite. This is one of many RF devices that work on the face and the body. Accent has a diminishing effect on the fat cells; it works like a mini-sauna and encourages the fat cells to liberate their fat. The effects are thus combined; improving circulation, drainage and fat reduction together help to reduce the circumference of the legs and improve the general texture, feel and appearance.

The head of the accent device is passed over the legs or body in a roller-type manoeuvre and is relaxing. The tissues gradually feel warmer and warmer until the optimum temperature is reached. Once this is reached, it is maintained by the same movements until the full treatment energy is delivered.

Mesotherapy can achieve similar but involves the administrations of minute injections all over the legs in order to improve circulation, drainage and to assist fat metabolism. Tiny injections made all over the troublesome areas are repeated every week in order to achieve an improvement.

Most of the time we use the Accent alone, but for stubborn areas a combination of Accent and mesotherapy may work better.
